Styles of Wine

Knowing the different styles of wine available is fundamental to enjoying any wine experience, especially when considering your food and wine pairing.  The following wine styles and the varietals and blends identified with those style serve as a basic guide to help further your enjoyment of wine. source: Wine Folly - The Essential Guide to Wine and Red Wines Boldness Chart.

Sparkling - Cava, Champagne, Lambrusco, Prosecco

Light Bodied White - Albarino, Grüner Veltliner, Muscatel, Pino Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Soave, Vermentino, Asti, Vinho Verde

Full Bodied White - Chardonnay, Marsanne Blend, Semillon, Viognier, White Burgundy (Chardonnay)

Aromatic White - Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Muscat Blanc, Riesling, Torrontès

Rosè - Rosè

Light Bodied Red - Shiava, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Wines of Burgundy (usually 100% Pinot Noir)

Medium Bodied Red - Grenache/Garnacha, Valpolicella Blend, Bobal, Carignan, Cabernet Franc, Mencia, Sangiovese (this includes Chianti),  Negroamaro, Rhone/GSM Blend (Grenache-Syrah-Mourverde), Barbera, Merlot, Montepulciano, Zinfandel

Full Bodied Red - Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Nero D'Avola, Aglianico, Malbec, Bordeaux Blend, Cabernet Sauignon,  Syrah, Pinotage, Petit Verdot, Mourverde,  Touriga Nacional, Petite Syrah, Sagrantino, Tannat

Dessert - Madeira, Marsala, Port, Sauternais, Sherry, Vin Santo
